 Southampton Skating School is a proud participant in the United States Figure Skating Association's Learn To Skate USA program.  The mission of  this program is to provide a goal-oriented curriculum that encourages ice skating at all levels and to enhance the quality of skating skills at these levels.

Preschool-age skaters develop preliminary coordination and strength to move around on the ice. The introductory classes are divided into four progressive levels for kids with no prior skating experience to build confidence in skating and themselves. Fun and games make this positive experience for your kids enjoyable and memorable.

The first stage of  skills forms a strong  foundation for your skaters to explore the world of skating. All will progress at their own pace working toward mastering each skill. Active start encourages skaters to trade in hesitation for excitement as they grow a love for skating. FUNdamentals harness those skills as agility, balance, coordination, and speed become the main focus of the curriculum.

Each free skate level is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps — all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements. These levels will be taught in a positive and interactive group format such as a bridge program, circuit classes or as an introductory training program. Instructors will focus on quality and mastery of skills

Drop-In Learn to Skate is open to beginner and intermediate skaters ages six and up looking to develop their skills and stability on ice.  


Class 1  11:45am - 12:15pm

Class 2   12:15pm-12:45pm

$30 per class

About Us


Jessie Kellis - Director of Skating

USFSA Certified Basic Skills Instructor, Member PSA
Skating since the age of 7, Jessica is originally from Garden City, NY.  Her earlier training began at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, NY. Jessica has an extensive background in classical and modern ballet, which served her skating achievements in form and artistic interpretation.  An experienced Basic Skills instructor, her passion and dedication to skating has led to a successful coaching & program management career that she hopes will continue to introduce more East Enders to her favorite sport.

This is her seventh season at Southampton Ice Rink and sixth season as Director, Jessica coaches Basic Skills, Snowplow Sam, Pre-Hockey, and is available for private lessons.


Joanne Doran

USFSA Certified Basic Skills Instructor
Joanne starting skating when she was 6 years old, by the time she was 10 she was training in Lake Placid, N.Y. At the age of 17 she joined the cast of Ice Capades and for the next 4 years she toured with Ice Capades East, West and Continental companies. Joanne has been coaching for 20 years; she has coached skaters to local and regional competitions. She has extensive experience in coaching Basic Skills, all freestyle levels, moves in the field and choreography. Joanne’s knowledge and understanding of the Basic Skills program has helped her coach skaters from Basic Skills to the advanced level of figure skating.

This is Joanne's sixth season at the Southampton Ice Rink where she teaches Basic Skills, Freestyle Figure Skating, and is available for private lessons.


Liz Mendelman

USFSA Certified Basic Skills Instructor

Liz grew up on Long Island where she began to skate at the age of eight with her younger sister Joanne Doran. Her father converted the backyard pool in the winter months into the skating rink for the girls practice. During high school, the family moved to Lake Placid where Liz pursued her other passion, skiing.  When Liz moved to East Hampton, she started teaching her two young daughters how to skate, which eventually led to her coaching career. 

This is Liz's fourth season teaching at the Southampton Ice Rink, where she coaches Snowplow Sam and Basic Skills and is available for private lessons.
